Commentary:
Finally (finally!), I have started renovating my studio downstairs - a project which is long overdue. After not one but two water incidents (a leaky foundation and a broken water heater - both of which were long ago fixed), there was mold and mildew in places, smelled nasty and had basically become a dumping ground for excess stuff (and a haven for creepy-crawly things). Thankfully, my nephew, Brian Totoro, not only has mad audio/visual skills but also loves to work with his hands and has gleefully taken charge of this project. This weekend, we cleared the room out, removed the stinky carpet, cut-out the damaged drywall and ripped out the moldings. You can see the transformation in the photos above.
The plan is to repair the drywall, re-paint, install rubber flooring and add an area rug. His wife, Amanda, happens to be an interior designer, so I am letting her run with it. We're thinking an interesting color for the walls (like a pale forest green) with white trim. It could be truly stunning, making my collection of framed concert posters "pop." We may even replace the ceiling tiles with wood and paint the metal framing black. It is going to be really, really cool.
Brian keeps talking about the "vibe" of the room being important and since it is right now completely torn up, it is a completely blank slate. Therefore, we have the opportunity make it just exactly how we want it. He sent me a text that I am taking to heart in this project:
The more you like thy room,
The more you want to be in thy room.
The more you want to be in thy room,
The more you're in thy room.
The more you're in thy room,
The more you're creating in thy room.
EXACTLY!
The more you like thy room,
The more you want to be in thy room.
The more you want to be in thy room,
The more you're in thy room.
The more you're in thy room,
The more you're creating in thy room.
EXACTLY!
Brian has also designed a massive record shelf for the living room, allowing me move my old crates downstairs into the studio. That will mean I will finally have access to all of my records (most of which have been packed away in boxed for years). This is so exciting!
But it also means there will be a lot of activity chez NuVoid in the coming weeks, so posting may be light. Please bear with me!
To paraphrase one of the world's greatest songwriters:
ReplyDeleteThere's a world where you can go
And tell your secrets to
In your room
In your room
In this world you lock out
All your worries and your fears
In your room
In your room
Do your dreaming and your scheming lie awake and pray
Do your crying and your sighing laugh at yesterday
Now it's dark and you're alone
But you won't be afraid
In your room
In your room
