Playlist 5-22-09

Here’s an idea I’ve been toying with. A friend of mine will sometimes ask me, “So what are you listening to?” And I often have to stop and think. I listen to a lot of music. I have an iPod for the car and a thirty-minute minimum commute each way every day. At home, I have thousands of records. I can’t see keeping up a complete list, but here are some things that stood out this past week:

* J.S. Bach: Brandenburg Concertos (AAM/Egarr) (Harmonia Mundi 2SACD)
* J.S. Bach: Violin Sonatas (Manze/Egarr/Linden) (Harmonia Mundi 2CD)
* Mary Halvorson: Crackleknob (hatOLOGY CD)
* Anthony Braxton: Seven Compositions (Trio) 1989 (hatOLOGY CD)
* Anthony Braxton: Quartet (GTM) 2006 (Important 4CD)
* Bob Dylan: Together Through Life (Columbia LP/CD)
* Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisted (mono) (Sundazed LP)
* Grateful Dead: To Terrapin: Hartford ’77 (GD/Rhino 3CD)

Love the photo! I can see all those Impulses in the upper left corner...sweet!

Would love to hear your thoughts on all these, and more. How's the new Dylan? What's your take on the Terrapin?

The new Dylan is fun -- a turn from the apocalyptic stuff of recent years. His collaboration with Robert Hunter on most of the songs contributes to that light-heartedness quality, I think. Vinyl sounds REALLY nice. The more I listen to this album, the more I like it.

To Terrapin is excellent, one of my favorite shows of that tour and it's a definite improvement over the circulating soundboard. Discs 1 and 2 are kinda short - it would have been nice if they'd tacked on some filler. And while the packaging is very pretty, the discs fit WAY too snug -- I've already slightly torn it trying to extricate the dang discs! (It's on my iPod for the time being.)Aside from that, it's a relative bargain.

Anyway, as Dylan says, "It's All Good."

Hey!! Sorry to use this for a non-blog issue, but you can always just not post this comment, right? I've been trying to email you, but my messages keep bouncing--it says "Unknown address error." Did you change your email? Anyway, thanks!

I got the error message again--the problem must be on my end!! Sorry--I'll look into it.

Hey, by the way, thanks for Wilco! I sometimes use Pandora when I work and plugged in Wilco so I get their music and lots of others "like" them. I recently got Summerteeth. They are really great!!

Turns out there's a GD station on XM, so lately I've had that playing while taking the kiddies out to parks and such on the weekends. They're not complaining so I assume they're enjoying it.
