Awesome pinata. I think it deserves some sort of explanation.

Thanks for the recent post on Tortoise. You had given me TNT a few years back so I pulled it out and have not stopped listening (even got Beacons).

I have to say though, I never would have thought to use the term Fusion to describe their music. It's something so far beyond what I normally would consider in that genre (or course, as you state, when I think of Fusion, the worst connotations come to mind: Sypro Gyra and the like, and then those recordings from the seventies full of black-page histrionics. )

Anyway, Tortoise is great music. I also cannot get enough of Wilco (have seven discs now). Thanks for that. Got me listening again to Billy Bragg.

Hi, Christopher!

That’s not a piñata, actually, it’s a, well, a rocking-kangaroo from Lizzy’s childhood, made by her great aunt and uncle. It IS made of paper mache, but you can sit on it and rock. Wahoo! Ride ‘em cowboy! I’ll take another photo of it and post it on the blog! It’s a trip!

Fusion is one of those terms like Third Stream that is actually useful if you can overcome the derogatory connotations that have congealed around them.

Glad you’re enjoying Wilco. The new album is fab, but live is where it’s at. You should check out the Ashes of American Flags DVD, if you haven’t already.

I had some extra birthday money, so I picked up the new Evan Parker, which has been popping up on your listening lists. Brilliant stuff! I'm behind the curve, as always, and I need to catch up on the other ECM albums, but having enjoyed immensely the live Electro-Acoustic stuff you turned me on to, I thought this was a safe bet. This is great meditative space music.

Re: fusion: I've always liked the -concept- of fusion, and it is a useful term for describing the music of folks like Tortoise and David Torn (and even Hatfield & the North), but unfortunately I can't stop my brain from seeing the cover of "Romantic Warrior" whenever I see the word!! I'm damaged by my past. Don't even get me started on Alphonso Johnson album cover art!
